MGMT reconnect with ‘Mother Nature’ ahead of new album

Every Halloween around Boston, there’s likely to be at least one indie band finding time to pretend, playing dress-up like kids and performing a full electric-feel cover set as MGMT. Tonight, it’s Mallcops’ turn as they flash delirium at Deep Cuts’ Halloween party.

But oh shit, plot twist — MGMT have decorated the day with music of their own, and it’s anything but spooky: The duo of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser have unveiled a groovy new song called “Mother Nature,” and it comes with word of the group’s forthcoming fifth studio album, Loss of Life. The new record is MGMT’s first since 2018’s Little Dark Age, and it’s out February 23 via Mom + Pop Music.

A breezy feel-good psych-pop hummer, “Mother Nature,” according to the dudes, “outlines the archetypical MGMT mythology of one hero attempting to get the other hero to come on the journey that they ‘must’ go on. One part sounds like Oasis.”

The track’s animated video was directed by longtime collaborator Jordan Fish, and it finds two animal friends named Dog and Turtle teaming up against an evil pet collector. “I hope the story makes people happy and feel connected to family, friends and the animal kingdom as well,” says Fish.
