Brooklyn’s Like a Doll takes its moniker from “the anxiety of feeling like a doll” and an effort to reclaim a childhood fraught with trauma and spin it into something positive. The project of musician Emma Stacher, the Like a Doll sound is billed as lullaby-rock, and it’s easy to hear why: New single “Don’t Throw Your Words,” which streams today (October 23), echoes the sentiments above with an ethereal, floating propulsion, hanging overhead like all the thoughts that race through our minds, and invites the listener deep into its sonic dollhouse.
“This feels like an anthem to believe in yourself,” says Stacher. “It jolts you from slower to faster and swings to reflect the back and forth of birthing self-confidence. The lyric ‘Don’t throw your words out’ repeats in the chorus with the overall message emphasizing how important our thoughts and voices are.”
Stacher’s thoughts and voices should only grow louder and with increased impact over the next few weeks, as Like a Doll’s self-titled debut album is set for release on November 10. That same night, they play Alphaville in New York City alongside Burlington’s Noah Kesey and The Burning Sun.
