Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of Music, Comedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: shallow pools at Crystal Ballroom
Calling all Puddles! There’s a “Pool Party” going on in Somerville this Sunday (October 22), and we have shallow pools to thank. The Boston alt-pop comet celebrates the release of debut album I Think About It All The Time at the Crystal Ballroom, and the lineup is as inspired as the record itself, with Halle Moné, Zola Simone, and the recently-featured Velvet Dreaming doing their part to ensure we’re not making it to work on time come Monday morning. Released this month by Equal Vision Records, I Think About It All The Time is a call to community, and with songs co-written with LGBTQIA+ superstar Lynn Gunn of PVRIS and Cameron Walker-Wright of Twin XL and The Ready Set, shallow pools community continues to grow. “I feel like we always want to make some kind of statement,” says Glynnis Brennan. “And we wanted to write something that basically said ‘Fuck the haters’. As members of the LGBQIA+ community, this just feels really important to us.”

Comedy: Yuck Fest at various locations
The inaugural Boston edition of Yuck Fest pops off this weekend, and the slate of comedy and music has pulled together a community. Founder Katlin McFee chatted with Vanyaland Comedy Editor Jason Greenough earlier this week about the festival, which welcomes the likes of Bethany Van Delft, Gordon Baker Bone, Michael Christmas, Daniel Van Kirk, Zahid Dewji, and others across a spectrum of venues, including Nick’s Comedy Stop and White Bull Tavern. “I’m so excited to be doing this in Boston. When I did it in Indianapolis, it was instantly one of the best things I’ve ever done, and I’m really proud of it,” McFee tells Vanyaland. “I love Boston and Boston’s comedy scene, so I’m just really excited to bring something different and something cool to the city.” Hit the event schedule below for details.

Film/TV: IFFBoston Fall Focus at The Brattle
We’re taking a quick breather from Spooky Szn mania to post up at The Brattle for this weekend’s Independent Film Fest Boston’s Fall Focus slate, which runs through Monday (October 23) at the Harvard Square cinema. Vanyaland Film Editor Nick Johnston delivered a stellar preview of the fest earlier in the week, highlighting nine films worth your time in between showing face at various Halloween parties. “We’ve got Palme d’Or-winners, Massachusetts neo-noirs, dreamy Nicolas Cage horror pictures, and two animated masterpieces among plenty more titles this year, and it’s gonna be a hell of a time,” he writes. We’re perhaps most excited for Fingernails, Christos Nikou’s sci-fi film that boasts an incredible cast led by Jessie Buckley, Jeremy Allen White, Riz Ahmed (showing tonight), but there are no wrong selections across this year’s slate.
