Music is rife with allegorical, intricate lyrical metaphors. For LØLØ, it’s very literal.
In the Canadian rock musician’s latest single “faceplant,” out today (October 6), the “falling in love” turn of phrase becomes a much more painfully real experience. She recently revealed that “a few months ago, leaving a boy’s house… I tripped and fell face first into the concrete, earning me a broken jaw (on both sides), a broken nose, a broken chin, and four lovely stitches across my face. This was the day I realized that I had fallen undeniably & irrevocably in love with him.”
From there, the Hopeless Records-backed song was ostensibly born.
Whether taken at face(plant) value or taken metaphorically, “faceplant” is a fun track that rehashes the very real, very relatable feelings of new love. LØLØ perfectly encapsulates that excitement mixed with fear and a hint of uncertainty that so often follows new relationship, viscerally capturing how it feels to realize “I didn’t just fall / I faceplanted.”
The frenetic energy of LØLØ’s emotion is supported by a pop-rock instrumentation, with bouncy guitars and a driving percussion line. With every push towards the infectious chorus, the song settles more and more firmly as an anthemic earworm — perfectly fit for the theater stages LØLØ is currently playing.
One such stage will be MGM Music Hall at Fenway on October 26, when LØLØ opens for Boys Like Girls, State Champs, and The Summer Set. Those going to the show should be sure to get there early to (potentially) hear “faceplant” live.
