Fans who attended boygenius‘ concert in Boston last night (September 26) got one hell of a show.
The indie supergroup of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus kicked off a short run of fall dates at MGM Music Hall at Fenway, the first of two shows that concludes tonight. While most in attendance were expecting a performance based around March’s acclaimed album the record, everyone on Lansdowne got that and much more.
First, boygenius debuted a rumbling, slow-burner new song called “Black Hole.” The track will be amongst four new tunes included on the trio’s forthcoming EP, a companion release to the record titled the rest, due out October 13 via Interscope. The new song was unexpectedly aired out to start the third and final act of the show, and the EP was unveiled at the show, too, its artwork displayed from the stage.
For the encore, boygenius dusted off “Ketchum, ID,” the closing track to their 2018 self-titled EP. And then ended the show with another cut from the EP, “Salt in The Wound,” with Hozier coming out unannounced to supply some guest vocals. The singer was in New England after a pair of shows Friday and Saturday at the Seaport’s Leader Bank Pavilion, as well as a Sunday swing at Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion, the latest dates on his Unreal Unearth Tour.
Not a bad Monday night in Boston, huh?
