Get in loser, we’re jumping genres with Poppy. The sound-shifting singer emphasizes the “lust” in “wanderlust” on “Motorbike,” an agile new single that propels us closer to the release of her October record Zig.
Like a testament to her forthcoming album’s title, “Motorbike” hotwires the pure pop sound of Poppy’s earlier records, zagging away from the throbbing industrial textures of recent singles “Church Outfit” and “Knockoff.” The pseudo-sequel to 2018’s “Girls In Bikinis” worships the inescapable allure of certain women — country-crossing vixens in latex — while simultaneously embodying Poppy’s muses, zipping her into a racy open-road anthem.
“I wonder why / Nothing catches my eye / Quite like the sight of a girl with a powerful machine between her legs” an autotuned intro states, before Poppy brandishes her well-worn creative freedom. “That girl on a motorbike / going where she wants to,” she quips on the chorus. You get the metaphor.
