This Show Is Tonight: Danzig celebrates Mother’s Day in September

Courtesy of Crossroads Presents

This past Friday in V3, we heralded the coming of Spooky Szn in cinema with The Nun II hitting theaters. On the music side of life, Glenn Danzig does the same to the live stage this evening (September 11) with an October Coming Fire salute as the 35th anniversary tour of Danzig’s debut album rolls into MGM Music Hall at Fenway.

Giving us hard rock classics like the universal breakout “Mother”, riff-immortal “Twist of Cain”, and stripper-eternal “She Rides,” Danzig dropped in August 1988 via producer Rick Rubin’s then-fresh label Def American Recordings. It marked a new era for the New Jersey native as he moved away from the horror-punk legacies of Misfits and Samhain and into more bluesy territory, solidifying a solo career that carries on to this day.

For this anniversary tour stop of Danzig, we’ll hear the classic album in full (though not in order, mixing things up and saving “Mother” for the very end) plus other devilish treats that are pretty satisfying. Recent setlists have the post-album part of the show lean heavily into Danzig II: Lucifuge and Danzig III: How The Gods Kill, and it’s a pretty great overview of Danzig’s first few years under his own name.

The stage set-up also looking incredible, with a visually striking backdrop and candelabras putting in work, and the iconic Danzig skull in life-size, 3D shape, cradling the drum kit up high over the band like it did back in the day. Glenn himself also looks and sounds great, and the 68-year-old is rocking the oversized skull belt-buckle to prove it.
