It’s been a bit since we’ve heard from David Fincher, who last released Mank back in 2020 and disappeared into the Netflix production cycle, and it’s been even longer since we’ve heard from Michael Fassbender, who basically gave up acting after those X-Men checks cashed so that he could pursue auto-racing full time — the dude competed at Le Mans! — so it’s pretty exciting that the two of them have teamed up to bring The Killer to the big screen.
No, it’s not a remake of the John Woo movie; it’s an adaptation of one of the most acclaimed French comics of the last two decades, with a script penned by Andrew Kevin Walker, who basically helped kickstart Fincher’s career with his script for Seven. Anyhow, get those depressed murderer vibes on with this teaser that Netflix dropped earlier on Tuesday, which is stylish as fuck (duh) and teases great angst to come.
Peep it:
In lieu of the one-line Netflix synopsis, here’s the logline from the bande dessine that the film is based on, via its American publisher, Simon and Schuster:
“A professional. A man of few scruples, nerves of steel, and a steady trigger finger, but also, a man on the verge of cracking. After misadventures in Central and South America and having earned enough money to retire comfortably, the Killer retires to Mexico, but his colleagues are still in need of his irreplaceable skills… and before long he’s drawn back into the great geopolitical game between Cuba, Venezuela, and the United States.”
The Killer will make its world premiere at Venice on September 3, and you can bet cash that people will have opinions of all kinds on this one. You’ll be able to form your own come October 27, when it makes its debut in select stateside theaters, or on November 10, when it becomes available to all Netflix subscribers (provided they haven’t been kicked off the service yet for mooching on a buddy’s account).
