It takes only a few seconds of Local Natives‘ breezy spring single “NYE” to be transported back to our care-free, indie rock-soundtracked youth. It ended up being just one of the many standouts on the enduring Los Angeles band’s July album Time Will Wait for No One, which will be on full panoramic displays tonight (August 22) when Local Natives roll into Citizens House of Blues with special guest Annika Bennett.
“Our new album begins with the ambient sound of Kelcey, Ryan and Taylor outside in the backyard of a Los Angeles studio singing these words together huddled around a single microphone,” Local Natives declare, referencing the title track. “Suddenly, the song kicks in with the full fidelity of the entire band, repeating the lyrics like a mantra of reassurance. Time flows on uncontrollably and change is relentless, and the people you love are the only constants.”
For many of us, Local Natives have been a constant as we get older — we as listeners, and them the band. It’s been a joint journey that began with 2009 debut album Gorilla Manor and leads to Time Will Wait for No One, the group’s fifth studio album.
“This album was made during a time of metamorphosis for us,” they add. “Former selves melting away as some of us became fathers. We endured periods of isolation, loss, and identity crisis. We grew and changed as individuals, but we found our way back to each other and made music that we can only make together.”
