Taco Bell Cantina eyes former Great Scott space in Allston

A new location for Taco Bell Cantina could fill the vacant Great Scott space in Allston.

As reported by Boston Restaurant Talk, the Allston Civic Association posted about a Virtual Abutters Meeting last night (August 8), hosted by the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, seeking community input on the Mexican fast food chain’s proposal to acquire a common victualler license and liquor license for the location at 1222 Commonwealth Ave. Taco Bell’s cantina concept pairs alcohol with its assortment of tacos, burritos, and other Mexican-themed menu items.

“The purpose of this meeting is to get community input and listen to the resident’s positions on this proposal,” writes the ACA.

The 1222 Commonwealth Ave. address was the longtime home of Great Scott, the beloved Allston rock club that was forced to close in May 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The space, at the corner of Harvard and Commonwealth avenues on the MBTA Green Line, has lay dormant since. Carl Lavin, the former booking agent at the club, is actively seeking a new potential home for Great Scott, after plans fell through to relocate up Harvard Avenue to the Pizzeria Regina space at the historic Allston Depot.

There are a few of these Cantinas currently in the area, with one just up Commonwealth Avenue on the Boston University campus, which opened in November 2020, and another on Harvard Street in Coolidge Corner, which opened last year.

“Please note, the City does not represent the owner(s)/developer(s)/attorney(s)/applicant(s),” writes the ACA. “The purpose of this meeting is to get community input and listen to the resident’s positions on this proposal. This flyer has been dropped off by the proponents per the city’s request.”

More to come. Live más.
