Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of MusicComedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.

MusicSomergloom in Somerville

If there was ever a summer to feel the gloom, it’s this one right here. We’re taking a quick break from looking ahead to autumn by indulging in this weekend’s Somergloom, a three-day swirl of doom, gloom, sludge, and shoegaze that kicks off tonight (August 4) with Marissa Nadler performing live, with support from The Infinity Ring and Kira McSpice, at The Rockwell in Somerville. On Saturday (August 5), things shift to Everett’s Bone Up Brewing for a Somergloom beer release show with Ashen Veil, Cradle of Judah, Still Life Sounds, and Tears From a Grieving Heart. Sunday (August 6) closes out the weekend woes over at Garage B at the Speedway in Brighton with Boston-born Elizabeth Colour Wheel, as well as Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean, a commissioned piece by SEED and visuals by The Dregs Liquid Light Show.

SOMERGLOOM WITH MARISSA NADLER + THE INFINITY RING + KIRA MCSPICE :: Friday, August 4 at The Rockwell, 255 Elm St. in Somerville, MA :: 7:30 p.m., 21-plus, $20 :: Event info & advance tickets

Comedy: Dan Hall at Nick’s Comedy Stop

Given the gloomy summer vibes referenced above, it’s no wonder why we’re lighting up with Dan Hall this weekend in the Theatre District. The Boston comedian and host of The Weed Game Show smokes out Nick’s Comedy Stop on Saturday (August 5), and as usual, Mic’d Up has the word: “Don’t let his generally laid back demeanor and light-hearted grin fool you. Hall is one of the best comedians on the grind right now, and seeing on one of the city’s most prestigious stages is not only a testament to his own work ethic and top-notch approach to stand-up, but also to the fact that stellar talent can be and is still being recognized around town.”

DAN HALL :: Saturday, August 5 at Nick’s Comedy Stop, 100 Warrenton St. in Boston, MA :: 8 p.m., $22 :: Advance Tickets

Film/TV: ‘Beat Street’ at Coolidge Corner Theatre

Throughout the month of August, the Coolidge Corner Theater is celebrating Been Here For Years: Hip Hop at 50, a full slate of programming that brings together documentaries, concert films, bio-pics, and dramas, as well as live performances and discussions. This Saturday (August 5), Coolidge’s After Midnite series screens Beat Street, a 1984 American breakdance drama film — starring Rae Dawn Chong!! — featuring New York City hip-hop culture of the South Bronx in the early-’80s.

Upcoming offerings include 8 Mile (August 8), Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (August 9), Straight Outta Compton (August 10), Friday (August 11), CB4 (August 12), House Party (August 17), Belly (August 23), New Jack City (August 26), and more.

“Part of the beauty of the culture is that it’s not just one thing,” says Billy Thegenus, Coolidge’s programming and outreach coordinator. “That’s why we’re excited to showcase this series, to remind audiences hip-hop has been telling stories that can range between tragedy and comedy as well as drama and horror since the beginning.
