Courtney Barnett shows off a meditative side with ‘End Of The Day’

Courtney Barnett just wants us to chill. The Australian singer, songwriter, and musician is usually busy rocking the fuck out in the name of the mighty riff, but right now she’s taking a different approach with End Of The Day, a new 17-track instrumental album of improvisations that’s out September 8.

To give us a gentle taste, Barnett has released three of its tracks today (July 11) in “Start Somewhere,” “Life Balance,” and “First Slow”; each display an atmospheric, slow-burn aura that positions the artist in a new reflective light.

The music of End Of The Day was originally created as part of the score to a Barnett documentary titled Anonymous Club, but it gets the album release treatment via own label Milk! Records and Mom+Pop; marking the final release on Milk! after a decade of music.

Barnett will take the record out on tour for a short series of live shows, including an appearance in October in Vermont. The gigs will feature two sets — the first with Barnett and collaborator Stella Mozgawa performing End Of The Day, and the second a more familiar type of show as Barnett performs stuff from her noisy catalog. Tickets go on sale Friday (July 14) at 10 a.m. local time.
