Move over Andrew WK, here comes Andrew X. And though the former has forever been the soundtrack to the raucous party, the later could be the music for the solemn morning after. The North Carolina singer-songwriter dropped his new single yesterday (July 5) in “Where Are You Now,” and it’s a melodic pop-rock piano ballad that has a rich texture to its simplicity, recalling hallmarks of ’80s pop production with some modern applications because flourishing with a shimmering conclusion. And within its lyrics, the tune has the artist taking a look back in order to move forward.
“I wrote ‘Where Are You Now’ after coming across an old picture of a dear friend from the past in a box of old photos,” he says. “Seeing the picture instantly took me back to how she made me feel when we were together. It also made me feel a fair amount of guilt about how I treated her, and a fair amount of regret due to the fact I never told her how I really felt about her, and how great of a person I really thought she was… I don’t know where she is now, but I wish her the best, hope she doesn’t hold hard feelings, and hope that she has found love and is living a great life.”
“Where Are You Now” will be featured on Andrew X’s forthcoming album Driving At Sunset, which hits September 20. It was produced by Matt Goldman (Underoath, Anberlin), mixed by Mark Needham (The Killers, Imagine Dragons), and mastered by Ted Jensen (Florence + The Machine).
