Fest Intentions: Levitation in Austin, Texas

With the midway point of the year arriving, rather unceremoniously, this weekend, we assumed we’d be done with these Fest Intentions posts alerting everyone to new music festival announcements. But Levitation was like “Hold my steer.”

The Austin-based psych fest returns to the Texas capital this Halloween weekend, holding court across several venues October 26 to 29. The lineup, as one can imagine, is quite massive, with nearly 100 bands taking part, revealed today (June 28) in its “first wave” band and artist reveal, including The Brian Jonestown Massacre, fest founders The Black Angels, Dandy Warhols, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Beach Fossils, Blushing, Ty Segall, The Church, Codiene, Slow Pulp, Twin Tribes, Nuovo Testamento, Flying Lotus, Turnover, Speedy Ortiz, Palehound, BADBADNOTGOOD, High On Fire, Blonde Redhead, Bully, Dead Meadow, Oneohtrix Point Never, Allah-Lahs, and a whole bunch more.

“For over a decade, Levitation has delivered lineups that span psych, dream pop, punk, indie, metal, darkwave and electronic music – helping carry the spirit of 1960’s sonic experimentation into modern times,” the festival writes. “It’s a beloved record collection manifested into a four-day weekend, with lineups that span continents and generations: a heady amalgamation of vintage gear, immersive light shows and visuals, buzzing amps, moody synths, leather jackets, and good times in Austin, Texas.”

It continues: “In 2023, Levitation expands the sonic spectrum and scope of the event with an eclectic lineup and the addition of two of Austin’s newest independent venues: electronic music destination Concourse Project, and South Austin’s outdoor, multi-stage event center The Far Out Lounge, where Austin Psych Fest was held in April. These new locations are in addition to Levitation’s traditional Red River and East Side venues, including the festival’s downtown main stage Stubb’s, and Red River and Eastside staples Mohawk, Empire, Hotel Vegas, Elysium, Parish, Antone’s and 13th Floor.”

Four-day passes start at $395, with plenty of single show ticket options as well. Get all the ticket info here, and hit levitation.fm for the latest.
