A little over a month ago we all woke up to the first new Boys Like Girls music in 11 years. But since life moves pretty fast in the modern age, we’re now served a second, follow-up joint just a few short weeks later, as the Boston pop-rock band’s vibrant new single “Language” hit the streams this past Friday (June 23).
With a slick nod to The Police and Boys Like Girls’ usual knack for melody and production, “Language” is dubbed as an examination of the unspoken language of attraction and the subtle cues and gestures we tend to read very much into. It should sound huge when Boys Like Girls hit the road later this year, a North American run that plays MGM Music Hall at Fenway on October 26 for some proper Boston homecoming action.
“According to Google, there are around 6,500 languages in the world,” says frontman Martin Johnson. “I took French, Spanish, and Latin in school, but can barely get through asking where the toilet is in Montreal or Mexico City. I guess I’m a one trick American pony, and there are even some versions of English I barely understand. They say the two universal languages are mathematics and music. I suck at math, but I can tell you, having played some decent-sized shows in non-English speaking territories, that the latter is true for sure.”
Johnson says his thoughts on communication were shaped in part by Boys Like Girls’ tours of the past. He adds: “Through those travels, I’ve also learned that it’s the silent languages that say the most. Body language, love languages, the language of the spirit, and other nonverbal communications can be the deepest connections we have as humans. With the language of attraction, there tends to be a moment where you both figure it out. You know. You feel safe, you feel seen, you feel excited. You pray you’re not crazy. A little touch, okay, you’re not crazy.”
