Watch the first teaser for Sofia Coppola’s ‘Priscilla’

Priscilla
A24

In case you forgot, we actually did get a Sofia Coppola movie in the six years since The Beguiled came out — that movie was called On the Rocks, and it was pretty boring, at least compared to the rest of her work. But Sofia Kings (this has to be what the fan base calls themselves, right?) should steel themselves because Coppola’s back with a big, bold project. That film is Priscilla, which is a biopic about the former Mrs. Presley, played here by Cailee Spanney in the title role and Jacob Elordi as Elvis. Get ready for a whole bunch of Baz Lurhmann haters to pop up in the comment section of every single article from here on out. Anyhow, A24 dropped a teaser for the project on Wednesday, and it’s a 45-second taste of what we’re assuming is going to be a pretty goddamn complex movie.

Take a look:

In lieu of a genuinely good official synopsis, here’s a great quote that Coppola gave Vogue last year that describes why she took the project:

“I’ve had her memoir for years and remember reading it a long time ago. A friend of mine was talking about her recently, and we got around to discussing the book. I read it again and was really moved by her story. I was supposed to start this big Edith Wharton project that was gonna take five months to shoot and felt really daunting. I came up against a few hurdles, so I just decided to pivot to making one film with one idea. I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it all felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland. She was going through all the stages of young womanhood in such an amplified world — kinda similar to Marie Antoinette.”

Priscilla, Queen of Graceland, will hit theaters sometime in October. You better bet your ass this is gonna be all over the Fall Festivals because if Neon’s gonna snatch up every Palme at Cannes, A24 is gonna lock down Best Picture at the Oscars.
