When tickets went on sale back in April for Melanie Martinez‘ July 1 appearance at MGM Music Hall at Fenway, part of her ongoing North American tour supporting new album PORTALS, we warned of the spectacle the alt-pop phenom was bringing to town. “The multi-platinum, 12 billion-streaming artist with a devoted following hits North America this summer …and she does it while ‘performing as an otherworldly new creature, which is a rebirth of her alter ego Cry Baby,'” we wrote.
Today (June 13), Martinez delivers a visual that’s more than just a peek behind the curtain, as her “VOID” music video invites us deep down into the world she’s created and the characters she’s nurtured. “VOID” was conceived, directed and costume designed by the artist herself, and should only increase buzz around her cult-like live shows. The clip has generated nearly 800,000 plays in about seven hours since its premiere.
“This is the first song I fully produced on my own,” says Martinez. “I remember screaming that chorus while crying, it felt like a weight I needed to get off of me. The weight of my anxiety, the weight of my brain. A void. A dark place where you are left alone with your own thoughts for introspection, in order to find the light within yourself.”
Step inside below. And try to make it out on the other side of Lansdowne Street next month.
