It’s long been said, and often repeated, that one who gazes into the abyss will soon find the abyss gazing back. If it’s a more an act of locking eyes and peering into the soul than any type of contentious stand-off, then perhaps the experience is soundtracked by “Vanity,” the new single from Drab Majesty that features Rachel Goswell of Slowdive on guest vocals. The spiritual and expansive track, which floats along beautifully with an increasing depth across its six minutes, will be featured on the Los Angeles alternative neo-goth project’s forthcoming EP, An Object in Motion, set for August 25 release via Dais Records.

It should come as no surprise that the two entities here are mutual admirers of each other’s work, connected through eras, with Drab Majesty sonic architect Deb Demure respecting the pioneering shoegaze and dream-pop efforts of Slowdive, and Goswell displaying an appreciation for Drab Majesty, which continues to hold a spellbinding influence over a modern crop of shadow music (add whatever ‘post-‘ or ‘-gaze’ entries that seem fit from perspective).

“As a long time listener and devotee of Slowdive, a band that literally shaped my DNA as a listener and musician, it was truly humbling to have Rachel offer her iconic vocal stylings to this song,” says Demure. “Her voice is a sonic treasure and unmistakable. I’m infinitely grateful to call her a friend and am still pinching myself wondering — ‘how did we get here?'”

And Goswell adds: “It’s no secret that I am a long time Drab Majesty fan so when Deb asked me some years ago now if I would be interested in collaborating it was an immediate yes. Honoured to give my voice to ‘Vanity.'”
