Oceanator enjoys some newfound power-pop freedom in ‘Part Time’

Everything from the weather to your internal body clock has declared that summer officially started this past weekend, and now Oceanator has given us a proper power-pop indie jam to put a little extra bounce in our step. It’s a one-off single called “Part Time,” it follows last year’s Nothing’s Ever Fine album, and it hits the streams today (May 30) via Polyvinyl. An upbeat and catchy-as-hell number that seems rooted in empowerment, starting over, and enjoying the little things in life, like getting a puppy and going outside, “Part Time” has some full-time staying power. Songwriter Elise Okusami hasn’t detailed any meaning behind it, except to say it was co-written with Cheekface’s Greg Katz and mixed by Alex Newport (Death Cab For Cutie, Bloc Party), but its lyrical nature makes it easy to apply to someone’s newfound sense of freedom. Sounds like summer, indeed. Check it out below, and hear it — probably! — when Oceanator plays The Sinclair in Cambridge with AJJ this Saturday (June 3), before returning to the Harvard Square rock club on July 16.
