It takes a lot of gumption to storm around TD Garden with a Stanley Cup replica the night of a Bruins game, but The Hangaz aren’t afraid of bear hugs and battle cries from fellow hockey fans.
The Dorchester hip-hop duo of Smok-N-Strok and Axestrumentals capture the electricity of the Boston team’s 2023 playoff hopes in their new video “Something’s Bruin,” a call for the Stanley Cup to return to Boston — even if this won’t be the year. And The Hangaz aren’t the only ones thirsting for a win.
“We were carrying the ‘Stanley’ around the North End and other parts of the city for watch parties and game let-outs, and people would stop to take pictures with it, screaming ‘We want the cup!'” the pair tells Vanyaland, recalling the deliberate timing of the video shoot. Look closely and you’ll also spot Warrior Ice Arena, the Bruins’ Brighton practice facility — plus a few key appearances from Boston music veterans that intercept the scenery.
“It was a huge honor for us to have Boston hip-hop legends, Twice Thou (from The Almighty RSO/Made Men) and T.D.S. Mobb, making cameos and supporting,” adds Axestrumentals, referencing the involvement of rapper Antonio “Twice Thou” Ennis and the ’80s-born Boston hip-hop trio.
The Bruins might be done for the 2022-2023 season after an unexpected first-round exit, but there’s no need to put this jam on ice; say “puck it” and tune in to “Something’s Bruin” below.
