By any measure, 11 years is a long time. But in pop music, it’s a damn near eternity. So it feels like a tiny miracle we sit here today (May 19) serving up new music from Boys Like Girls, the glossy comet of a Boston pop-rock group who unleash their first new tune since 2012. The track is called “Blood and Sugar,” it’s a thunderous jolt of ’80s throwback flair and heavy modern production, and it’s just the start of a larger comeback for songwriter Martin Johnson and the boys.
“Thematically the song is fairly simple, an empty calorie relationship that’s so delicious you don’t care,” says Johnson. “You’re willing to deal with the crash. It continues to beat you down yet you keep coming back for more pain… almost like you’ve learned to love it. Why this obsession? We’re only skin and bone. Humans. Just blood and sugar, really.”
He adds: “I think everyone has an infatuation with something bad for them. Cigarettes. Sports gambling. Porn. Internet validation. Pills that change the way you feel. Buying too many shoes. I know I spend a lot of time trying to fill the empty hole where drugs used to be. I spend most of the time trying to fill that hole with ‘perfection’. But in the end… nobody’s perfect. Hey. we’re only blood and sugar, right?”
Absolutely. Word is more new music from Boys Like Girls will be on the way, and tour dates are expected to surface shortly. Welcome back, gents.
