Here’s the bad news: Women in Boston’s music community aren’t immune to the entertainment industry’s deep-seated sexism. Now for the more optimistic news: Scene supporters are eager to right that wrong. So eager, in fact, that a new documentary amplifying the women of Boston music just sold out its Independent Film Festival Boston showing at the Somerville Theatre.
The demand for gender equality takes center stage in Beautiful Was the Fight, filmmaker Dave Habeeb’s 90-minute burst of ferocity and hard facts about the prejudice that mars our studios and creative spaces. Place extra emphasis on the titular “fight;” no one in town is taking this tired bullshit lying down, as Habeeb’s new projects makes clear with its abundance of frank interviews.
After selling out one of the Somerville Theatre’s smaller cinemas earlier this week, the film’s Sunday evening (April 30) screening for IFFBoston has been upgraded to a 400-capacity cinema. Perhaps there’s no better metaphor for giving everyone a fair shot to participate in the arts — but we’ll let the women of Boston music explain it better on the big screen this weekend.
