Low Cut Connie rarely operates in a world of lower-case, so it’s all too fitting that the new single from Adam Weiner’s South Philadelphia-based rock n’ roll project arrives in all caps. It’s called “ARE YOU GONNA RUN?”, it’s an impassioned, soulful tune with an undertow-like pull, and it sets the stage for Low Cut Connie’s forthcoming album, ART DEALERS, out September 8 via Contender Records.
“This record is all kink and no shame,” says Weiner. “With Low Cut Connie, I try to create a safe space for you to just absolutely get your freak on.”
And here on “ARE YOU GONNA RUN?”, Weiner concocts an inviting world that throws it back to the thrilling empowerment of yesterday. The album is said to serve as a love letter to Lou Reed and Patti Smith’s New York, an American art life long gone in spirit and reality. The heartfelt single dives even deeper: “I was thinking of Ronnie Spector with that one. She had a sweet kinda sad voice, but she was tough as hell. A real rock n’ roller. I admire tough female artists like Tina Turner, Madonna, and Patti Smith. I feel like they all informed this tune in some way.”
ART DEALERS is set to hit right around the time Low Cut Connie kicks off a North American tour, September 7 at The Sinclair in Cambridge. From there a mini-residency around New England follows, with a show at Mohegan Sun, as well as gigs around Burlington, Portland, Hamden, and Pawtucket, before Low Cut Connie take the music out to the masses beyond our borders.
