There’s a long held notion about music aligning with the seasons; lighter, sunnier sounds are fit for spring or summer, where more dramatic, lush compositions with a heavier density slot nicely in autumn or winter. We’re taking that idea and examining it through a sharper lens, all to suggest that the music of Nick & June is less about the wider, more populated season designation and more fit for micro-slotting in a certain time of day — more specifically, those moments pre-dawn when the world stands still, not yet awake to the chaos awaiting, not yet aware of the tension society will soon awaken.
The German dream-pop duo of Nick and Suzie-Lou Kraft further this idea by casting a hypnotic early-morning spell with their new single, a hazy daydream joyride flowing with restrained euphoria called “Hugh Grant & His Consequence.” It’s the follow-up to their weathered cover of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” and the latest to be featured on the pair’s forthcoming EP, Beach Baby, Baby, due May 12. There’s a gentle calm on the surface, but a greater intensity bubbling up from within.
“We wanted to dive deeper into textures, subtle melodies and lyrical creation,” Nick offers up about Nick & June’s approach. “We wanted to paint the songs in all their facets with melody, lyrics, sound aesthetics.” He adds: “During the pandemic, we watched many classics of film and all-time favorites… Maybe that’s why the overall concept of the EP has a cinematic touch.”
Right now, the selections surfacing en route to the larger EP release feel like gently unfolding chapters, storylines beginning to blossom. And we’re eager to take this enchanting duo with us as we take a deep breath, mentally collect ourselves, and prepare for the day ahead.
