A mini-fest with a mega-lineup will wrap up a trifecta of Boston bills at Sonia this weekend (April 23). Following two nights of Rock and Roll Rumble semifinals, the Cambridge venue trades rock for rap at Sunday’s Spring Fest, a fast-paced debrief on Boston hip-hop organized by Good Music Showcase Series. Artists on deck to perform include Elos, YNL, Yahweh, Jetteye, Young Treb, 42Revo, CityBoyKiyan, Kasia Levon, Exy Stacks, Highkey Random, Kold Kwan, Mizz Vrod, Camarie Jones, Dblockthaparty, and Cyph GTTB.
Following years of similar events in Providence, Austin, and Brooklyn, Spring Fest represents one of Good Music Showcase Series’ most ambitious endeavors to date. Just this week, the all-nighter of an event was bumped from the Middle East Upstairs to neighboring venue Sonia, and expanded its lineup from 10 performers to 15. It’s quite the glow-up, compared to the series’ first-ever showcase at the now-shuttered Maggy’s Lounge in 2014.
“It’s a great feeling to be moving to bigger venues for our shows,” says curator DJ Alcide (pictured above). “We’ve done smaller venues for so long, and it’s grown to now a nationally-known showcase. We are one of few showcases selling out venues with just local artists, although we do on occasion book artists from all over the U.S. …Our goal is to do the bigger venues in not just Massachusetts, but all of New England and abroad.”
