Are vampires making a comeback? Sure, the bloodsucking freaks never really went away after the Twilight saga landed with a massive thud, and there have been plenty of good films featuring them — or some sort of take on their mythos — released in the interim (The Transfiguration, Only Lovers Left Alive, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night), but it’s looking like they’re back in a big way this year. Renfield‘s hitting theaters on Friday, Robert Eggers is making his own Nosferatu, and presumably Warner Bros. has to release their ‘Salem‘s Lot remake at some point. But it’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter, directed by Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark helmer Andre Øvredal, that has our interest really piqued. It’s about the doomed ship that carried Dracula’s coffin to London, and it looks like a pretty swell time, at least based on this trailer that Universal dropped on Thursday.
Peep it:
Here’s a synopsis:
“Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel ‘Dracula,’ ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London. Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.”
The Last Voyage of the Demeter sails its way into theaters on August 11. If you’re thinking of going boating this summer, just make sure you check the cargo holds before you set off — either you might have some rotted wood or mold, which is bad for sailing, but you might also have a coffin containing thousand-year-old vampire just sort of chilling below, and we’re pretty sure he’s got a thirst for something other than White Claw.
