Artists who endorse leaving soul-splintering 9-to-5s are a blessing; the valiant ones who actually go through with it are the cornerstone of society. Rest assured that when Baby Cate starts spitting about securing a sabbatical on her new single, she’s speaking from experience.
After dreaming about musical fame in last year’s single “SLEEP,” the Boston musician finally punches in to a full-time music career with her new track “QUIT MY JOB,” released today (April 7). “Hope you know I ain’t playin’,” she raps, flexing newfound freedom while her letter of resignation gets stuffed in her last employer’s file cabinet.
“What made me quit my job was realizing after almost a year of working there, everything was low for me,” Baby Cate tells Vanyaland, reflecting on her choice to resign. “My mood, energy, my motivation to try and be able to do music at the same time, even if I knew it’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It felt like I was blinded by all of that lowness, and that’s when I knew I needed to quit.”
With no tedious shifts standing in the way, she and Philadelphia producer Thatkidlbs (pronounced “that kid pounds”) assembled “QUIT MY JOB” in under 24 hours, a solid argument for ditching your day job if there ever was one.
“It’s crazy because this song was done in a day,” Baby Cate elaborates. “My friend Thatkidlbs, also jobless at the time, lives in Philly. He sent me a beat beginning of January, and he’ll tell you it was a throwaway, but I knew right when I heard it I could do something with it.”
Hey, when you know, you know — especially once you’ve abandoned any career involving cubicles.
