Jazzmyn RED summons ‘The Feminist’ inside us all with new single

Women’s History Month may have just wrapped, but Jazzmyn RED’s battle cry for equality is still sounding in the streets.

The Boston rapper returned last week (March 31) with a single titled “The Feminist,” an anthemic extension of her 2020 release REDvolution that traces centuries of women’s stories, right up to RED’s radical present. The track’s muses range from ancient royalty to modern revolutionaries, as RED summons the formidable spirits of leaders like Nefertiti and Angela Davis to embolden her bars. Here, “the feminist” isn’t a title — it’s a respected, age-old archetype.

“I wanted to create something that reminded women who we are the descendants of,” RED explains. “Something that made us feel empowered, that made us feel strong, you know? In times like these that’s the reminder we need, that we are and always will be powerful and we ain’t easily moved, revolution is in our blood and it always has been.”

“One question / Cuz I’m runnin’ out of patience / Do you have any idea who you facing?” she raps, stony and unflinching like the Medusa reference that follows. “Not easily moved,” indeed.
