If you clicked on this assuming that you’d be reading about a 4K remaster of the Paul Walker classic Joy Ride, you’re wrong, but we’ll give you points for creativity (and besides, they’re putting out Stop Making Sense again, so who knows?). This Joy Ride is a raunchy hard-R comedy that premiered a couple of nights ago at SXSW, directed by Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon screenwriter Adele Lim, about a group of four friends who have a wild and wonderful time traversing Asia even when shit goes belly up for them. It’s gotten a pretty swell response from those in attendance in Austin, and perhaps to capitalize on that social media noise, Lionsgate dropped a red-band trailer for the film earlier on Friday. If you need a refresher on what a red-band trailer is, it means “Do Not Watch This At Work, Unless You Have A Cool Boss.”
Peep it:
Here’s a synopsis:
From the producers of ‘Neighbors’ and the co-screenwriter of ‘Crazy Rich Asians,’ ‘Joy Ride’ stars Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu. The hilarious and unapologetically explicit story of identity and self-discovery centers on four unlikely friends who embark on a once-in-a-lifetime international adventure. When Audrey’s (Ashley Park) business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the aid of Lolo (Sherry Cola), her irreverent, childhood best friend who also happens to be a hot mess; Kat (Stephanie Hsu), her college friend turned Chinese soap star; and Deadeye (Sabrina Wu), Lolo’s eccentric cousin. Their no-holds-barred, epic experience becomes a journey of bonding, friendship, belonging, and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.”
Joy Ride hits theaters on July 7. Honestly, this just makes us want to go buy a Kei car and go grand touring across the continent.
