There’s no real point in beating around the bush here: Jonathan Demme’s Stop Making Sense is one of the greatest documentaries (meaning one of the greatest films) of all time, and anybody who disagrees is free to live a small-suited life free of rhythm and fun and pure celluloid ecstasy. It’s a staple of repertory houses for a reason — not only will it always draw a crowd, but it’ll leave them fucking pumped about life — and now A24, fresh off of an Oscar sweep that saw former frontman David Byrne nearly get another Academy Award, is remastering the film and putting it back in theaters. They’ve released a very fun little teaser for the re-release, and we don’t really want to spoil it for you. Let’s just say that it features what must be an extremely expensive dry cleaning bill.
Peep it:
Here’s what A24 had to say:
“If the suit still fits… This year, we’re bringing Jonathan Demme’s groundbreaking 1984 Talking Heads concert film ‘Stop Making Sense’ (newly remastered in 4K!) back to theaters worldwide.”
And here’s what the Talking Heads had to say about the re-release (via Deadline):
“There was a band. There was a concert. This must be the movie!”
Honestly, if we’ve learned one thing from David Byrne’s career as a writer, it’s that being concise is a swell way to go about things, and good on both of them for keeping it short and sweet.
No word on when exactly Stop Making Sense will hit theaters (again), but the trades are suggesting it won’t be too long, and the restoration is on track to be finished and ready to go at some point later this year. Now if only someone at A24 could track down the rights to Sign o’ the Times, we’d probably be in 4K remaster heaven.
