Em Beihold rides a course of life with ‘Roller Coasters Make Me Sad’

Those looking for a dark horse in the quest to become the new queen of alt-pop may want to take a ride with Em Beihold. The Los Angeles singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer — who crashed our 2022 Year In ReView with the infectious “Egg In The Backseat” — is back with another devilish twirl around mountainous glossy pop through the thumping “Roller Coasters Make Me Sad.”

The track dropped this past Friday (February 24) via Moon Projects/Republic Records, hitting the streams alongside an official lyric video created by Julia Fernandez. “Roller Coasters Make Me Sad” is all about the ups and downs of life and the pressures to push forward and have fun when everyone around them is seemingly having a grand ol’ time.

“I should be having fun, I should be having fun, I should be having fun,” Beihold chants as a near-universal mantra for being forced to do pretty much anything these days. And for her, the sentiment is directly tied to her career, which has taken off since the release of her debut sincle in January of last year.

“It’s about the experience with ‘Numb Little Bug’,” she admits. “On the day it dropped, the response was insane. I should’ve been happy. Instead, I felt this pressure to keep the momentum going. I knew that everything that goes up must come down. I was bracing for the fall, because it was so unbelievably good. I couldn’t just enjoy the ride. At the same time, I do hate roller coasters.”

We’re happy to report that there aren’t any roller coasters in the Greater Boston area, so when Beihold swings into town on April 10, playing MGM Music Hall at Fenway on the latest date opening up for Lewis Capaldi, there won’t be much to fear but her continued ascent.
