Natalie Shay is pushed to ‘The Edge’ of a broken friendship

This Tuesday delivers Valentine’s Day to the masses, whether we want it or not. But it also marks the start on Wednesday of Anti-Valentine’s Week, an unofficial boo-hoo stretch we learned about 30 seconds ago that culminates with Breakup Day on February 21. We mention this because Natalie Shay has returned to our broken hearts n’ damaged playlists with “The Edge,” a slightly skewered indie-pop breakup song that’s not for the lame lover in our lives, but the lame friend who needs to be shown the door.

The North London artist, who we last caught up with in late 2020 through her affirming single “Naked”, penned the contagious and energetic track about a breakup with her best friend. It dropped back on February 9 — just in time for the festivities ahead — and drives forward with the type of propulsion that only a brazen dose of sudden awareness could maintain.

“This is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever released, and as the feelings are still very raw, I’m hoping to find closure in this,” Shay says. “Despite missing her and the good parts of the friendship so much, I know in order to still respect myself, I have to honor the power of an apology, and in this case, the lack there of one.”
