It’s been a couple of really good years for Owen Wilson. Ever since Vince Vaughn dipped his toes into genre films and Wes Anderson came a-calling again, Wilson’s been in some pretty good stuff — The French Dispatch, of course, but also Marvel’s Loki, where legions of fans on Reddit have been demanding that he say the word “Wow” because of the memes, regardless of what the character would do. We’re guilty of it too, given the title of this article. But now it’s our turn to say “Wow,” because this trailer for Paint, from writer-director Brit Andrews, features Wilson in one of his wildest roles yet: he’s playing Bob Ross. You know, “happy trees” and all of that. This script was a hit on the Black List a few years back, and it looks pretty goddamn interesting, at least from this little glimpse that IFC Films provided on Wednesday.

Here’s a very short synopsis, but this movie falls into a category we like to dub “Things That Honestly Probably Could Sell Themselves Based On A Single Phrase,” so it’s not really like it needs a straight-up essay from whatever poor copywriter got tasked to try to come up with 800 words on some Netflix release:
“Owen Wilson stars as Carl Nargle, Vermont’s #1 public TV painter who is convinced he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, and fans hanging on his every stroke… until a younger, better artist steals everything (and everyone) Carl loves.”
Paint will make its way into theaters on April 7, and for those who subscribe to AMC+, it’ll also arrive on that service later this year. We don’t know anybody who does, but we’re sure that someone out there is excited to have something to watch aside from Hell on Wheels and Low Winter Sun re-runs, and have already exhausted the entire Shudder back catalog. Still, what a wild and weird world this is.
