The music of Big Thief will one day be taught in classrooms (hell, we’d take an entire course based solely around the lyrics of “Not”). Until that time, the Berklee-educated and Brooklyn-based indie-folk band is bringing the classroom to its shows. Last week, Big Thief invited educators and students across the country to attend the private soundcheck sessions for their upcoming North American tour, which kicks off later this month at Higher Ground in Burlington, Vermont.
The band shared the message across social media last week, highlighting a desire to spark conversations about creativity and music.
“Big Thief is looking to bring an educational component to the touring process by offering open invitations for teachers to bring their students to our soundchecks on the upcoming 2023 US tour, the band writes, via Instagram. “Our hope is that students would be able to come see the soundcheck and ask questions and share in a discussion about creativity, music, playing shows, songwriting or whatever!”
Big Thief add: “Teachers — we would love to hear if you are interested in participating and how we can organize this so that it is of most benefit to your students. If you are interested in bringing your class to a soundcheck, and/or have any ideas that you think would help us get the ball rolling and make this experience as accessible and organized as possible, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at this email address: bigthiefsoundcheck at gmail… Let’s chat and hopefully see some of you at soundcheck.”
The 20-date tour opens with a trio of New England shows — the aforementioned Burlington gig on January 31, followed by Portland’s State Theatre on February 2 and College Street Music Hall in New Haven on February 3. Get all dates below. Big Thief are touring behind last year’s Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You, which dropped in February via 4AD.
