The Bowery Presents is ready to take concerts outside.
Less than a year after opening Brighton venue Roadrunner, Bowery Boston’s parent company today (December) announced The Stage at Suffolk Downs, a partnership with The HYM Investment Group that will bring large-scale concerts to the former thoroughbred race track in East Boston. Set to launch in Spring 2023, the venue will hold up to 8,500 concert goers within the infield of The Track at 525 William F McClellan Highway.
Suffolk Downs is no stranger to hosting major concert events, having welcomed The Beatles in front of 25,000 fans back in 1966. According to Bowery, in the decades since the site has also welcomed the Jackson 5, Radiohead, and Bjork.
The Stage at Suffolk Downs will give Bowery its first outdoor venue in the Boston area, and a larger capacity tier for concerts above its current venues The Sinclair (525 capacity), Royale (1,200), and Roadrunner (3,500).
“The Bowery Presents has always focused on creating and operating venues where both fans and artists alike can have a great experience,” says Josh Bhatti, Vice President and head of the Boston office of The Bowery Presents, an AEG Presents Company. “We are confident Suffolk Downs will join Roadrunner, The Sinclair, and Royale as a beloved concert venue in Greater Boston, delivering on our commitment to keep the music first. The Bowery Presents is honored to have the opportunity to work alongside the HYM team to bring The Stage at Suffolk Downs to fruition.”
The Stage at Suffolk Downs appears to be part of a larger project overhauling 161 acres of the East Boston space, located on the Revere border, with The HYM Investment Group redeveloping the area into a mixed-use neighborhood of housing, hotels, two retail squares, and office space. The Stage at Suffolk Downs will be operated seasonally.
“Suffolk Downs has been thoughtfully designed as a place that brings people together and connects communities,” says HYM Managing Partner and CEO Thomas N. O’Brien. “We are thrilled to partner with The Bowery Presents who will help us continue to realize this vision as we bring the proud history of live music back through The Stage at Suffolk Downs.”
Bowery is set to unveil the opening lineups for the new venue at a later date.
