The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie unveil 20th anniversary album tour

The year 2003 was a busy one for Ben Gibbard. In February, his celebrated electronic-pop project The Postal Service released its debut and only album Give Up, followed by emo stalwarts Death Cab for Cutie issuing Transatlanticism that October. With the 20th anniversary for both fast approaching, The Postal Service and Death Cab are teaming up for a co-headlining North American tour that will find Gibbard pulling blissful double-duty across 17 shows, performing Give Up and Transatlanticism in full.

The tour kicks off with a flurry of five New England shows: September 8 at Portland’s Cross Insurance Arena; September 9 at The Ryan Center in Kingston, Rhode Island; September 10 at New Haven’s Westville Music Bowl; and then two nights, September 12 and 13, at Boston’s MGM Music Hall at Fenway. From there, the tour hits all the usual spots before wrapping October 13 at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

While Death Cab is no stranger to the road, and has its own headlining tours set for 2023, these shows will mark the first live performances from The Postal Service in a decade. Tickets go on sale to the public on December 16 at 10 a.m. local time.

“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003,” says Gibbard. “The Postal Service record came out, Transatlanticism came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.”

For The Postal Service sets, Gibbard will be joined by collaborator Jimmy Tamborello and Jenny Lewis, who provided backing vocals on Give Up. Death Cab’s lineup will be rounded out by Nick Harmer, Dave Depper, Zac Rae, and Jason McGerr.
