The after-hours trailer deluge continued yesterday (December 1) when Disney took the stage at CCXP with two trailers just guaranteed to set the internet ablaze. First up is a first look at James Mangold’s Indiana Jones 5, now titled Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which is bound, in part, to be a feature-length apology to the segments of the audience that didn’t care for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It looks kind of… odd. And no, we’re not bothered by geriatric Indy adventures: Mainly, it’s the modern-day tech involved. It’s shot on digital (strange!) and features some pretty gnarly digital de-aging technology to make Harrison Ford look young again. But your mileage may vary, and we can’t help but get chills when we hear that theme.
Take a look:
In lieu of an official plot synopsis, here’s a bit from Screen Rant summarizing the main thrust of the film’s plot:
“Speaking with ‘Empire‘ magazine, the film’s co-screenwriter, Jez Butterworth, has revealed the plot summary for ‘Indiana Jones 5’. The film will take place in 1969 during the height of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. With many of the scientists behind the space programs having Nazi backgrounds, Jones is determined to find nefarious activity hidden in their explorative endeavor. Read what Butterworth detailed below:
‘The simple fact is that the moon-landing program was run by a bunch of ex-Nazis. How ‘ex’ they are is the question. And it gets up Indy’s nose… It’s not just that the model of what a hero is has completely changed. It’s not just that they’re looking for something where there’s nothing up there – it’s like Reno without the gambling, or whatever his line is. But the people that are behind it are, you know, his sworn enemies.'”
So, yeah. Space Nazis, all though we have a strange feeling that Dial of Destiny won’t be going to outer space. Back in time, though… that’s another question.
Anyhow, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will hit theaters on June 30, 2023.
