It’s devil season. It’s cat season.

It’s devil-cat season, and Diablogato are reveling in their autumnal prime. Amidst these glorious peak-October days, the Boston band has unleashed the doomsday stomp “Jet Black Night,” their first new music since 2019’s Old Scratch LP.

Needless to say, plenty’s changed since those “before times,” including the group’s overarching sound. “Jet Black Night” represents Diablogato’s sudden stride into great unknown, both in terms of grappling with the life post-2020 and spearheading a new sonic direction.

“We are stepping away from the traditional rockabilly and punk stigmas,” explains vocalist and guitarist Drew Indingaro. “‘Jet Black Night’ takes some hints of ‘70s Aerosmith, ‘80s Blasters, ‘90s Cramps. . . .We felt that this song set a footprint in the direction we are starting to head into. We want to expand our sound together and see where it takes all of us.”

The answer is an enticing highway to Hell — or at least a fast track away from the shambles of society that are still standing. Either way, Indingaro’s got good reason to croon about watching “the whole world burn” as the band revs its new lease on rock ‘n’ roll.

“I think how people interpret the song is totally subjective, but it was a product of the pandemic, the national and global shit storm we had been living through the past couple of years, in my mind at least,” adds drummer Jesse Mayer. “I don’t know if ‘Jet Black Night’ is romancing the apocalypse or whistling past the graveyard – probably a little of both. But that’s always been our style.”

Well, some (macabre) things never change.
