Allison Janney goes Liam Neeson in the ‘Lou’ trailer

We’ve still got a long, long way to go when it comes to achieving perfect gender parity on-screen and behind the scenes in Hollywood, but it’s helpful to celebrate minor victories whenever they do come along. Why are we saying this concerning the new Netflix thriller, Lou? Well, it stars the Academy Award-winning Allison Janney in a role that might have gone to Liam Neeson (at best) or any number of respectable actor/action stars in the last decade or so. It’s not a typical career pivot one might see following an Oscar win (as well as a lengthy stint on one of America’s most popular sitcoms), and it definitely doesn’t look like the post-win career-cratering that has stalked winners of the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards.

It’s also certainly not a Pitof production, and we’re sorry to disappoint those five or six Catwoman heads out there. Either way, Lou looks like a pretty solid little survival flick, and the trailer that Netflix dropped on Monday should give you a good idea of what you’ll sign up for when it drops next month.

Peep it:

Here’s a synopsis:

“Thinking she’d put her dangerous past behind her, Lou (Allison Janney) finds her quiet life interrupted when a desperate mother (Jurnee Smollett) begs her to save her kidnapped daughter. As a massive storm rages, the two women risk their lives on a rescue mission that will test their limits and expose dark and shocking secrets from their pasts. Academy Award winner Allison Janney and Emmy Award nominee Jurnee Smollett star in ‘Lou,’ alongside Logan Marshall-Green and Ridley Asha Bateman.”

Lou hits Netflix on September 23, right in time to kick off your fall with style. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate hurricane season coming to a close, either.
