We were going to make a joke about how it feels like a decade has passed since Peter Farrelly’s Green Book won Best Picture over Roma and a bunch of other good options (we’re, of course, excluding Bohemian Rhapsody from that qualifier), but enough crazy shit has gone down in the past few years that it might as well have been that long. But his new project, The Greatest Beer Run Ever, which stars Zac Efron and Russell Crowe, seems like it’d fit in well with his new brand of smarmy feel-good cinema that covers serious issues in a feel-good way. This time, it’s about a dude who went to an active war zone to give some cheap beer to his buddies who were actively being traumatized by their experiences in combat. Fun stuff, y’all, and you can watch the trailer that Apple dropped for the project here.
Peep it:
Here’s a synopsis:
“To show support for his neighborhood friends serving in Vietnam, Chickie Donohue (Zac Efron) decides to do something totally outrageous: travel to the frontline by himself to bring the soldiers a little piece of home — their favorite can of American beer. However, what started as a well-meaning journey quickly turns into the adventure of a lifetime as Chickie confronts the reality of this controversial war and his reunions with his childhood buddies thrust him into the complexities and responsibilities of adulthood. Based on an incredible true story, ‘The Greatest Beer Run Ever’ is a heartfelt coming-of-age tale about friendship, loyalty and sacrifice.”
The Greatest Beer Run Ever will have its world premiere at TIFF in a few weeks, but it’ll be available for your Pabst-hazed viewing both on Apple TV+ and in theaters on September 30.
