We’ll set the scene: It’s October 1, and we’re all at Leader Bank Pavilion in the Seaport, enjoying a crisp autumn evening in New England as Death Cab For Cutie roll through their familiar hits and life-shaping catalog. But suddenly, Ben Gibbard and the boys break out a new song, a shimmering stargazer tune that glistens off Boston Harbor and all her shiny new glass buildings, and maybe, just maybe, we’re content in the present and no longer looking back. And all suddenly feels right in the world.
That new song is called “Foxglove Through The Clearcut,” and it’s a slow-burn thriller that cascades through unfettered emotion and post-rock grandeur. And it’s the latest from the band’s forthcoming 10th studio album, Asphalt Meadows, out September 16.
“Foxglove is by far the most personal song on the record,” Gibbard admits. “While I was writing it, I thought I was merely the narrator. But the longer I sat with it, I realized I was both the protagonist and the narrator.”
Blossom with it below, and anticipate the holy ever-loving fuck out of it on that early October evening.
