Ever go to a restaurant and wonder exactly what the hell is going on in the kitchen? Why things are taking so long, or what exactly is in your creme fraiche garnish to give it that strange color? Well, you probably won’t find the answers you’re looking for in Mark Mylod’s The Menu, but you will find a pretty decent cast — Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, and a creepy-ass Ralph Fiennes — in service of a familiar plot: rich couple heads on a tropical retreat, are confronted with their privilege in certain ways, and have to experience some wild shit before they can get back to the real world. But we’re interested in this one because Mylod’s an accomplished television director: ever watched an episode of Succession or The Affair? Well, he might have been behind the camera. And based on this brand-new trailer that Searchlight Pictures just dropped (yes, they still exist in the post-Fox era!) on Wednesday, it looks like a pretty fun time, though you’ll probably have to count those calories from all the stress eating you’ll do and also make sure not to choke on popcorn when you start laughing. If you’re not Heimlich-trained, perhaps now’s the time to look into that.
Peep it:
Here’s a brief synopsis:
“A couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises.”
The Menu will be served up to general audiences on November 18, and we’re kind of surprised that Fall Festival audiences aren’t going to get an early taste. But still, get ready to get stuffed, folks. And are we going to cram our eventual review with as many culinary-based puns as humanly possible? Probably. That’s what makes life living, after all: cheap puns.
