You know what’s a pretty great movie? Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges. It’s the kind of first film that a director will always feel like they’re fighting against with their subsequent work: It’s so good — so funny, so well-acted, so well-plotted — that one will chase that kind of high all the way through their filmography. Seven Psychopaths wasn’t it, nor was Three Billboards, so one would have to have better hopes for The Banshees of Inisherin, right? It’s a reunion of sorts between McDonagh and his two leads from In Bruges, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, and concerns the collapse of a friendship between two Irishmen. We’re sad that Ralph Fiennes isn’t in it (at least as far as we know), but we’ll always have “You’re an inanimate fucking object!” to quote until the day we die. Searchlight dropped a trailer for the picture earlier on Thursday, and check it out if you like Irish accents.
Peep it:
Here’s a synopsis:
“Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ follows lifelong friends Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship. A stunned Pádraic, aided by his sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), endeavours to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer. But Pádraic’s repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences.”
The Banshees of Inisherin will make its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival next month, and we’ll be seeing it a week later at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, so you should expect a review around then. But should you fear spoilers as much as you should fear Martin McDonagh’s wrath, you’ll be able to check out the film when it releases on October 21.
