Summer begins anew next week, and Lightning Seeds have given us an extra, and rather unexpected, ray of indie-pop “Sunshine.” The legendary English band and product of genius songwriter Ian Broudie (few have ever written a greater song than “Pure”) has today (June 15) announced a new album called See You In The Stars. The new LP, which features two tracks co-written with Broudie’s long-time collaborator James Skelly of The Coral, is set for October 14 release. And it’s led by a effervescent new single in “Sunshine.”
Despite being active on the touring circuit over the past few years, this marks the first new Lightning Seeds music in 13 years, since 2019 album Four Winds. And the feathery sweet “Sunshine” recalls the pitch-perfect pop of Broudie’s celebrated ’90s output.
“The song is about the sun being the source of life,” says Broudie, via Clash. “I’ve had many dreams worrying about the future of an uncertain world. But then the sun shines and everything feels more positive and hopeful.”
“Sunshine” already sits up atop the greatest hits package alongside other Lightning Seeds classics like “Lucky You” and “The Life of Riley.” And we sure could use it’s positivity right now, regardless of where we sit in the seasons.
