Naomi Westwater is sticking up for the black sheep of the astrology world. No, not Scorpios, we’re talking about the other universally-loathed sign: Geminis.
Channeling the significance of last Monday’s new moon (May 30), the Boston singer-songwriter has dropped a video for her song “GEMINI,” a hybrid spell-prayer-intention that paints the star sign in a more personal, nuanced light.
“As the popularity of astrology has risen over the last few years, Geminis have gotten a bad rap,” Westwater notes on Bandcamp. “This mutable sign that contains multitudes can be thought of as two-faced and sneaky. But in their duality, Geminis hold both happiness and depression, both bitterness and love, they show us the challenge and excitement of life.”
In the accompanying video, Westwater embraces that duality. She toys with themes of twins and twos as she winds through a labyrinth of astral musings. But somewhere along the line, she transcends the same duality, too. We’ve known Westwater’s singer and songwriter “faces” for years. “GEMINI” reveals a new layer; the self-mixed track officially adds “audio engineer” to that list. After all, why limit yourself to two sides (or skills) when you could contain multitudes instead?
“I am continuing to grow as an artist, which means experimenting with electronic music and being my own engineer,” they explain. “I’m constantly learning, but I find it powerful to call myself a producer and to control the way my music sounds.”
Celebrate Gemini season below with Westwater’s artful new video, and catch them performing at BAMS Fest this weekend.
