Thor(s) meet Gorr in the latest ‘Love and Thunder’ trailer

Thor
Disney

As advertised over the weekend during the NBA Playoffs, Disney dropped the full trailer for Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder on Monday night but did so while we were seeing Top Gun: Maverick (review to come later this week but spoiler alert: It rules). Hence, a post some 12 hours after every Marvel fan worth their salt has already torn apart every frame of this trailer looking for clues as to what this will mean for the MCU at large, raising all sorts of questions. How big was Natalie Portman’s paycheck in order to bring her back to this business? Why does new baddie Gorr (Christian Bale) look like Baron Harkonnen from Dune after a few years’ worths of PX90 training and intermittent fasting? And how has Russell Crowe not been in one of these movies already? Only time will tell, but you can start guessing yourself after watching the trailer below.

Peep it:

Here’s a synopsis, though you probably could just go off and read Jason Aaron’s run on Thor: God of Thunder and come away with the specifics while you also fall in love with Esad Ribic’s wonderful artwork (at least for some of the run):

“The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced — a search for self-discovery. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who — to Thor’s surprise — inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.”

Thor: Love and Thunder will ride the lightning into theaters on July 8. How much money do we want to bet that this is going to set up Hercules as Hemsworth’s replacement in the All-New, All-Different Marvel that’ll come at the end of Phase 4? Gotta get those new contracts in order, after all.
