Boston Calling 2022 Homegrown Artist Profile: Coral Moons

Courtesy of the band

Editor’s Note: In May 2013, Boston underwent a music revolution. Award-winning digital arts magazine Vanyaland and game-changing major-league music festival Boston Calling launched within 10 short days of each other, completely altering and elevating the landscape where music and culture intersect in a city that had previously gone relatively stale. In the near-decade since, the two entities have been a defining feature of our city, both for its residents and how it’s perceived everywhere else. In Spring 2022, Vanyaland and Boston Calling team up to showcase the homegrown bands and artists that help shape the most Boston lineup of Boston Calling ever. Boston Calling’s ’22 headliners — Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, The Strokes — and its solid undercard are well-known and established; but over the next few weeks, keep it locked as Vanyaland profiles the homegrown talent that decorates the lineup like never before. Nine years later, Vanyaland and Boston Calling continue to showcase Boston in new ways, and we have the sounds to prove it.

Artist bio:

Quickly making a name for themselves in the Boston scene, two time Boston Music Awards nominee Coral Moons brings their signature blend of retro-rock and surf-pop to the indie stage, drawing influences from Maggie Rogers, Lake Street Dive, and Alabama Shakes. Their debut single Fall In Love, featuring in-your-face harmonies, catchy electric guitar riffs, and the raw vocals of lead singer/songwriter Carly Kraft, released in July 2019. The song rapidly caught fire to the indie scene, acquiring 50K+ streams on Spotify, regular airplay on Boston’s WERS 88.9FM, and a feature on WGBH (Boston’s NPR) alongside icons Allen Stone and Brittany Howard.

In August of 2021 the band released their highly anticipated debut album Fieldcrest: a full-length LP produced by Sam Kassirer of Great North Sound Society (ME), best known for his work with Lake Street Dive and Josh Ritter. The release led them to stages around New England and beyond, playing Levitate Music Festival and opening for numerous nationally touring acts including Ripe, AHI, and Motel Radio. The album also landed them a feature in the Boston Globe with accompanying music videos that premiered with PopMatters and Atwood Magazine.

Fieldcrest is a departure from the band’s early work but maintains the identity that makes them unique. Coral Moons’ debut record was born in the studio which allowed them to explore the depths of their sonic palette through dense synth pads, exploratory drums tones, and nostalgic songwriting. Fieldcrest is an album that focuses on the human experience while exploring many familiar topics such as childhood memories and daydreaming.
