Mal swirls around a sense of confinement and routine on ‘Oven’

Later this month, Mal, the project from Los Angeles-based visual artist and indie-folk musician Mallory Hauser, is set to support illuminati hotties for 16 live dates across Europe. But their new single, a smoky and enchanting tune called “Oven”, leans into feelings and emotions rooted in nearly the opposite of something so mobile and free like touring.

“Looking back, this song feels like it hits this sense of confinement and routine that forms when you stay in one place for a long time,” says Mal. “The lyrics are a reflection of that day-to-day monotony while the chaotic track acts as the friction that starts to seep through as you become more uncomfortable in that repetition.”

“Oven,” with its portal-like look into a disenchanted soul, will be featured on Mal’s upcoming sophomore EP, Continuous Short Feature Film, set for release later this year. It was produced by Mal, who also directed its music video, a throwback to ’50s-era 1950s domestic stereotypes made in collaboration with director of photography Seannie Bryan (Skullcrusher, DAISY WORLD, Jack Harlow, Walk The Moon). Adds Mal: “I wanted to capture the clash of calmness and chaos in a very visual, surreal way — establishing a very slow pace and simple setting then flipping it on its head once the smoke starts to come into frame, leaving the viewer in a kind of altered state as everything settles down again.”
