He might be down to just a single mic again, but Neal Brennan’s latest one-man show is as powerful as ever. Come this summer, after working it out in other cities, he’ll be unleashing it on the city of Boston.
As announced this week, Brennan will continue to bring his latest highly successful one-man show ‘Unacceptable’ to different cities around the US this year, including Boston’s Wilbur Theatre on July 31. In addition to the Boston stop being part of the first batch of non-New York dates following the show’s extensive run at Cherry Lane Theatre, which began last summer, it will also mark the first time Brennan has made his way back to a Boston stage since he brought his ‘Here We Go’ tour to the city in 2018.
While his 2017 smash-hit Netflix special, 3 Mics, tackles topics with three different deliveries (from, you guessed it, three separate microphones), Brennan’s new stage effort, directed by artist and magician Derek Delguadio, utilizes only one microphone as the Chappelle’s Show co-creator meticulously delves into his own defects and examines his inability to fit into a group, and the subsequent alienation that comes along with it. While the deeply personal nature of the show is no surprise, given Brennan’s comedically genius ability to capture a crowd with both humor and sometimes poignant sincerity, it still offers up yet another scorching piece of evidence that not only shows that Brennan remains a creative mastermind after years of working both behind and in front of the camera, but also that it may not be too far of a stretch to say that he is one of the most effective and engaging artistic minds of our time.
Tickets for Brennan’s return can be accessed via presale starting today (April 20) at noon EDT by using the code VANYA before they go on sale to the general public on Friday (April 22) at 10 a.m.
