Like the queen she is, Phoebe Bridgers has swooped in and redefined this New Music Friday right before our lonely eyes and ears. Bridgers has today (April 15) released an enchanting new song called “Sidelines,” written for Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of Sally Rooney’s 2017 novel Conversations With Friends.

A snippet of the track surfaced on the show’s trailer earlier in the week, teasing its May 15 premiere, and we’re told Bridgers is a big fan of Rooney’s work. Now we’re treated to the full thing, written with bandmate and collaborator Marshall Vore and Ruby Rain Henley, and it has an undertow-like pull to it that suggests some serious emotional drama is about to unfold on our television screens. We don’t even need a quote from her; the track kinda speaks for itself.

“Sidelines” marks “the only original new song” from Bridgers set for release this year, according to a press release, and it sure is a good one. She’ll play Coachella this weekend and next before an extended series of live shows on this continent and Europe, and her North American “Reunion” tour takes her north for a June 9 appearance at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine.
